Vineer Bhansali, Ph.D., Founder and CIO
Vineer’s 25-year investment career started at Citibank, where he founded and managed the Exotic and Hybrid Options Trading Desk. He later joined Salomon Brothers in its Fixed Income Arbitrage Group, followed by the CSFB Proprietary Trading Group. Dr. Bhansali was at PIMCO for 16 years, serving the last eight years as MD and Head of the Quantitative Portfolios Team, which he founded in 2008. Dr. Bhansali also managed all of PIMCO’s analytics from 2000 to 2010. Among other responsibilities, he was the lead PM for the PIMCO TRENDS Managed Futures Strategy Fund, the PIMCO Tail Risk Hedging Funds, PIMCO RealRetirement and RealPath Funds, and PIMCO’s indexed ETFS. He was also co-PM of the PIMCO Global Multi-Asset Fund, PIMCO Global Relative Value Fund and PIMCO Distressed Senior Credit Opportunities Fund. He has written four books on finance: “Pricing and Managing Exotic and Hybrid Options”; “Fixed Income Finance: A Quantitative Approach”; “Bond Portfolio Investing and Risk Management”; and his most recent, “Tail Risk Hedging”, and authored over 25 refereed papers on topics as varied as option pricing, fixed income, tail hedging, asset allocation and economics in leading Journals that include the Journal of Finance, Financial Analysts’ Journal, Journal of Portfolio Management, and Journal of Risk. He has received numerous awards, including the Graham and Dodd Scroll Award and TIME magazine’s college achievement award. Under Bhansali’s leadership, PIMCO received the Risk Manager of the Year Award in the asset-management category in 2002 from Risk Magazine. In its announcement of the award, PIMCO cited “a proprietary system developed in-house by PIMCO’s Vineer Bhansali, Ph.D. and his team.” Dr. Bhansali received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Harvard University in 1992 and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Physics from Caltech in 1987. Vineer is an ultra-marathon runner and has finished the Western States Endurance Run numerous times, including earning the silver buckle in 2014. He has over 2000 hours of flight time in all types of aircraft, including jets and helicopters, and holds the Airline Transport Pilot Rating. He has served on the Investment Committee of the American Physical Society, and currently serves on the Investment Committee of the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies.
Ken Miller, CFA, Portfolio Manager
Mr. Miller is a Portfolio Manager concentrating on LongTail’s tail risk and discretionary accounts. Prior to joining LongTail, Ken was as an executive vice president and multi-asset portfolio manager at PIMCO, where he served for 21 years and contributed strategy and research for the firm’s Investment Committee and regional portfolio committees. Mr. Miller most recently managed equity derivatives execution for portfolios in PIMCO’s Newport Beach Office, including for tail risk-related funds. Ken was the lead portfolio manager on PIMCO’s $100 billion G10 currency hedge overlay platform and facilitated the evolution of the trading, accounting and risk analytics structure since the product’s inception; and also tailored strategy, solutions and analytical tools for a broad array of clients. Prior to PIMCO, he was a Financial Analyst at ABN AMRO and a software engineer at Capital Management Sciences Co. Ken earned an MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business (1993) and a BA in Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley (1988). In addition to his business and academic achievements, Mr. Miller is a competitive triathlete who has completed the San Francisco Bay swim from Alcatraz Island. Ken sits on the board of a local non-profit and has done mission and relief work in Haiti.
Paul Wendler, Chief Compliance Officer and Director of Operations
Mr. Wendler is LongTail Alpha’s Chief Compliance Officer and Director of Operations responsible for regulatory and guideline compliance, firm-wide operations, PM trade support, operational risk management, and general office management. Prior to joining LongTail Alpha, Mr. Wendler spent more than 10 years at PIMCO, serving as Newport Beach’s Middle Office manager and as head of the Global Leadership Unit – Middle Office, which included functional responsibility for all global middle office procedures. He possesses 13 years of investment and financial services experience, holds an undergraduate degree in business/economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and is a graduate of the Marine Corps University’s Command and Staff course. Mr. Wendler is a retired infantry officer and Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps with more than 23 years of service including one tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In his last assignment in the Marine Corps Reserves, he was a member of the Camp Pendleton Emergency Operations Center and served as a Senior Watch Officer responsible for crisis action planning and crisis action management. Mr. Wendler is also extremely active in the community. He has volunteered as a Little League baseball coach for the past 9 years and is a board member of The Devil Pups Youth Program for America and a committee member of the Los Angeles Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
Jeremie Holdom, Research Strategist
Jeremie Holdom is responsible for carrying out research to enhance the implementation of LongTail Alpha’s investment ideas and quantitative trading strategies. Jeremie obtained a Master in Finance degree from Princeton University in 2017, where his master’s thesis focused on econometric modelling and studying carry across various asset classes. During his time as an undergraduate at the University of Toronto, Jeremie was a competitive swimmer and became a national champion in the 400m I.M. at the 2012 Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) Championships.
Joe Guirguis, CFA, FRM Quantitative Account Manager
Joe Guirguis is an Account Manager focusing on client servicing and marketing. Joe spent five-years at PIMCO where he was a Product Specialist and member of the team that created and developed the PIMCO Absolute Return Strategies (PARS). Following his time at PIMCO, Joe attained a second undergraduate degree in Math and Economics from Rutgers University (2010) along with a Masters in Computational Finance (MSCF) from Carnegie Mellon University (2014). Most recently, Joe was part of the Portfolio Analytics and Strategy team at FreddieMac where he helped develop and implement tools to quantify the P&L impact related to model errors. Joe is a former collegiate soccer player and currently participates in CrossFit and running in his free-time.
Linda Chang, Senior Operations Associate
Linda Chang is a Senior Operations Associate focused on firm-wide operations and operational risk management. She previously worked at PIMCO as part of the Middle Office and Cash Desk, and State Street where she focused on trade management and operational process improvements. Linda obtained a Master of Business Administration from The University of Southern California in 2014. She enjoys working out and running in her free time.
Brian Baker, Managing Director, Senior Strategic Advisor
Mr. Baker was a Managing Director of PIMCO LLC, Chief Executive Officer and Director of PIMCO Asia, and Co-Head of PIMCO’s Official Institutions Business. For 18 years, Mr. Baker oversaw PIMCO’s business in Asia ex-Japan which encompassed portfolio management, credit research, client service, product development and business development functions. He was responsible for developing strategic business plans and overseeing their implementation across 20 Asian countries. As Co-Head of Official Institutions Business, Mr. Baker developed and executed global business plans for this client base and supported PIMCO’s efforts by meeting with central bank governors and reserves managers, ministers of finance and their staff, and sovereign wealth fund CEOs and reserve managers. Brian is an avid hiker and diver and travels around the world to seek out new hiking and diving venues.
Harry Markowitz, Distinguished Research Advisor
Harry Markowitz, known as the “father” of modern portfolio theory, is distinguished research advisor to LongTail Alpha. He received the 1989 John von Neumann Theory Prize and the 1990 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
Markowitz is currently professor of finance at the Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His pioneering work spans numerous disciplines, and he foresaw many of the investment problems and solutions that LongTail Alpha seeks to address.
